33RD OPEN LETTER TO US PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP

A trail and legacy of tears for many immigrant American families

-

YOUR intended Immigration Law, although you have left it to Congress, if implemented according to your campaign promises will leave a trail of wailing American families, as some will be “thrown out” in the global wilderness and their brothers and sisters outside the USA will be prohibited.

Mr. President, even as America implements the Laws it makes, the American people should not forget the fundamentals of Human history and the era of globalisation where we are today. The fundamentals are;

• In this world, we are all migrants – as humans have moved from one place to another throughout history. And, we are still moving.

• The Americans of today are all migrants except for the natives that they found already settled there when Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492.

• Humans have always helped the fellow humans they recognised as new arrivals to their area and helped them in terms of food, shelter, clothing, medicine and security. Chief Seattle who was of native stock of people of American particularly helped the new white settlers by urging his people to help them with food, shelter and other requirements, as the settlers were trying to establish themselves. It is not by mistake that he has been remembered by naming the City of Seattle in Washington State. It is within Human social etiquette to welcome and help others in need, as long as those coming come in peace.

• When European colonialism was expanding it was often preceded by some peaceful agreements of welcoming the white people by those they found. The original basis of such agreements was for the benefit of both. Frist it was usually the mutual trust for peaceful existence, exchange of goods and offering of land for settlement of the new arrivals. Conflict arose when the settlers forcefully wanted more land, more goods at the expense of the native population. To this very day conflicts arise when one group becomes greedy and wants everything to the exclusion of others.

• The globalisation process began centuries ago has made people settle in various continents, having originated from other continents. All continents got settled from the original migration of Human being from Africa – the cradle of mankind. The settlements and movements of people today is faster, easier and better because of technological advancements and good records as well as communication. The world is increasingly moving towards that of a global citizen, as people have relatives everywhere across continents and races. This process, Mr. President is unstoppable.

Mr. President, your proposed (at least as stated in the campaigns) immigration Laws are moving against the tide of Human history, and against the era of globalisation. You will not fight and win, because natural laws of human history, and human movements, coupled with advanced technological solutions to humanity, cannot be stopped by a single nation or a single President, no matter how powerful. Your administration can enact whatever laws you want to enact, but the tide of human migration manifesting itself in the current globalisation process will not stop. Therefore, your administration may only leave a trail and a legacy of wailing immigrant American families for this period of your leadership. I can assure the future migrants and their families, that human movements will not stop; the natural tide will not be stopped and their tears will be wiped out by history. Mr. President, you cannot fight nature. Donal Chanda Lecturer (Rtd) UNZA
