-

By JOSSY CHAIMA A COPPERBELT University business economist says there is need for citizens to fully participate in the governance of the country for the economy to grow.

Father Charles Chilufya said government was unable to run the country alone, hence the need for all Zambians to be involved.

In an interview with the Daily Nation yesterday Father Chilufya said government should ensure that citizens were educated and empowered with creativity.

He said for the economy to grow, people should be free to criticise government and provide checks and balances.

Father Chilufya said structures and policies that support citizen’s participation in the governance of the nation should be put in place.

He said government had been preaching about diversification for years without creating an environment that made it possible for people to become creative.

"The more people participate in the governance of the country the better for the economy. Government cannot run the economy alone it grows with creativity and thinking of people politics and economics go hand in hand," he said.

Father Chilufya who is CBU Chaplin said the education sector was struggling to provide students with knowledge to become innovative.

Father Chilufya said the type of education being offered in Zambia was based on memorization and did not give room for students to think on their won or be creative.

He said there was need to change the education sector by providing practical education and indigenise the education in the country.

He said Zambia needs to create its own knowledge base and not relay on foreign text books.

“It is a challenge for teachers and us academicians to provide a type of education that helps students look at their own reality and be able to respond to situation in their own environment, we need indigenous kind of education in our country,” he said.
