‘Emulate freedom fighter’s to grow Zambia’
By MAILESI BANDA MINES Minister Christopher Yaluma says the values and sacrifices that freedom fighters sho$ed in fighting for independence should be emulated by the current generation to enable them transform Zambia into a middle-income nation.
Mr Yaluma said the agenda of having a nation that is growing and leaving no-one behind will only be attainable if the citizens put up a spirited fight in the economic affairs of the nation.
Speaking during the Konkola Copper Mines, Zambia day independence day on the Copperbelt on Tuesday, he said the day provided an opportunity to re`ect on the sacrifices made by freedom fighters and to recall the peaceful journey made together since independence.
Mr. Yaluma commended Government for the investment into the mining sector and the communities they operated in.
“The investments you are making within your operations and the community are noteworthy, and the long-term vision that you have for KCM operations and business on the Copperbelt is a source of great inspiration,’’ Mr. Yaluma said.
Meanwhile, KCM chief executive officer, Steven in, said they often drew parallels between Zambia’s journey since independence and their own journey stating that the history of Zambia cannot be told without reference to the Copperbelt and the role that industry has played in building the nation.
Mr. Din paid tribute to Zambia’s freedom fighters while also focusing on the important role of partnerships for KCM’s business. ‘’At KCM, we have a 50-year vision for our business and opportunities on the Copperbelt. We want to see the Copperbelt grow into a diversified and resilient economic hub,” Mr. Din said.
He also said with partnerships between the mines, Government and the community the country could attain full benefits of Zambia’s natural resources and deliver the scale required to regain their position as the number one producer of copper in Africa.
