KANYAMA MP SLAMS COUNCIL OVER FAILED SERVICES

-

By KALOBWE BWALYA LUSAKA City Council has failed to meet the demands of Kanyama people in terms of garbage collection, among other services, Kanyama Member of Parliament Elizabeth Phiri has charged.

Ms Phiri said once Kanyama constituency was declared a municipality, her office would be on top of things because the local authority had no capacity to meet the demands of the constituencies in Lusaka.

Ms Phiri said she would ensure that services were delivered and people had equal share of the national cake because they were a priority.

She said Kanyama was the richest constituency because industries, companies, including Lusaka city market and Soweto markets were located in the locality, yet the residents were not receiving services from the council.

The parliamentarian said the Manja Pamodzi programme which was being spearheaded by Zambia Breweries was a good initiative because the community had realised the importance of the programme.

“Due to the vastness of Lusaka city, garbage collection in Kanyama Constituency has been a challenge as a result this has made the area to generate a lot of garbage, hence the cholera outbreak and other diseases,” said Ms Phiri.

She recommended Tombwe Company for coming on board with the residents collecting garbage every Tuesday as part of their social responsibility programme.

Ms Phiri bemoaned the fact that Cholera had broken out earlier than anticipated in the area because of lack of clean drinking water. The water was contaminated and posed a health hazard to people.

She said most people especially in Garden area and Kanyama West had been drinking water from the shallow walls, therefore they needed tapped water.

“Have been quarreling with Lusaka city council over collection of garbage which is not even done effectively, as a result there are mountains of garbage in Kanyama.

“Last year ZNS helped us to clean up Kanyama and we did not record any cholera case throughout the year, therefore, we will make a change by ensuring that LCC listen and help us so that Kanyama is free from Cholera,” she said.
