IMPETUS TO ACHIEVE:

THERE’S NO TELLING WHAT TOMORROW MIGHT BRING

- BY MUYANGWA MUKUNI

SO why not take a plunge? Why not take a leap of faith and see what it brings? After all, there is no telling what tomorrow might bring?

When I say that there’s no telling what tomorrow might bring, it means a lot of things. It could mean that if you do something that is risky with an unpredictable outcome whereby if it swings one direction, you will win big and if it swings the other direction – well, you get the picture.

It could also mean that there is a certain way in which life springs a surprise about who is going to become what tomorrow. Things don’t always go as we might anticipate.

Dealings with other people: In life, it is always important to treat other people well, because you’ll just never know what the person next to you will become.

If there is any lesson that I have picked from the national affairs of our country, it’s the fact that the person you least expect may become so powerful tomorrow that you will not be able to believe it.

When such a person assumes power, virtually everything and everyone around their circles gets to have a much improved life. As for those that were something before, they quickly become yesterday’s news.

I do not know why things are so, but it’s important to understand the times that we live in and how they can impact your life depending on what sphere you find yourself in.

So dear reader, I say to you: be careful how you treat others because this life is a life of ironies.

Who will fall off and who will rise to a large extent is up to us as individuals. If we fight hard enough, we will triumph, but even if we are destined for triumph, the one thing that we must be sure about is that we will face obstacles. There is truly no sweet feeling without breaking a sweat. The uncertainty of tomorrow is an insecurity, much as it is a promise of hope.

Many people fear what tomorrow might bring. Long time employees fear what will happen to them after retirement or in the event of losing a job. People fear taking all sorts of leaps due to the outcome being unknown.

Remember that just as you fear the worst case scenario for tomorrow, you should know that there is always the possibility of a positive turn of events.

We human beings have a tendency of choosing to err on the side of caution. We have a tendency of remembering the disappointing events of yesteryear so as to avoid falling into similar traps.

Those haunting memories can paralyse so badly that we choose to never take risks again. Even where examples abound of positive achievements, including our own in the past, we choose to ignore these for the same reason. I have said before and I will not stop saying that people who take risks increase prosperity.

Haunting memories can paralyse so badly that we choose to never take risks again.”

Just as most people are afraid of what tomorrow might bring, let it be known that even those that have gone far through taking risks did not know what the future held at the time they took those risks.

I’m sure dear reader, you will agree with me that dropping out of university is one of the riskiest things one can do or even contemplate. Talk about not knowing what tomorrow might bring, it is pretty obvious to all that dropping out of university or college will only bring you untold misery.

This notwithstanding, Michael Dell – founder of Dell Computers – dropped out of the University of Texas to advance his interests in putting together and selling upgrade kits for personal computers.

This was back in 1984; fast forward to present day – well, who doesn’t know Dell Computers that are produced by his multi-billion dollar company. He was recently reported in Fortune magazine as having said the following words to a group of people: “Don’t be afraid to make a mistake.

Experiment. If you want to really make it big, you better come up with something unique, differentiated that nobody else is doing.” Adding a few words of caution, he said: “And if you go and ask people if it’s a good idea, most of them will tell you ‘no’. So don’t go ask.”

When I say there’s no telling what tomorrow might bring, I am talking about taking a plunge to achieve your dreams. I am talking about beating that fear factor that often prevents us from pursuing our dreams.

Sometimes in life, you have to give it a shot. Yes you may lose, but then you can pick up the pieces and move on.

In fact some people say that when you are trying to achieve something big, there is no such thing as losing, because what you go through will ultimately prove to be a learning experience more than anything else.

When I give an example like Michael Dell, I am not in any way advocating for anybody to drop out of college or university. I am trying to remind us that taking a plunge into the unknown can yield such positive results that your story will one day become legendary.

Dell also says that if you want to pursue certain interests, do not ask people if what you want to go into is a good idea because most of them will tell you that it is not.

He advises that you do not share your ideas with other people. There is much truth to this as well. Those that can never take a risk to see what it might bring them tomorrow are the last people to advise you that some of your gambles are worth it.

They will never see your hopes and aspirations for tomorrow as you yourself envision. So in conclusion dear reader, know this: tomorrow threatens to bring us failure but we must take a chance because there is always the possibility of claiming a glorious victory.

We must also always treat people with the common decency and respect that they deserve not only because they are human beings but also because as the world turns, they may well occupy a very strong position tomorrow whilst we are weak. There’s no telling what tomorrow might bring.
