Zambia Army win judo tourney
By GRACE CHAILE LESOETSA ZAMBIA Army on Saturday scooped the Zambia Judo Association (ZJA) Livingstone League tournament after accumulating unassailable 77 points.
The Army team who won the Lusaka League tournament last month with 98 points displayed a brilliant performance at Youth Community Training Centre (YCTC) in the tourist capital to cement their place as the foremost title challenger.
Zambia National Service finished second with 30 points while third placed Livingstone club had 17 points and tail enders Mazabuka only managed to collect a point.
ZJA also conducted a oneday workshop on gender based violence and HIV/AIDS to enlighten the judokas on their role in fighting the vices.
Association general secretary Mabvuto Ng’uni said sports personalities had a bigger role to play in fighting vices affecting their respective communities.
“Issues of gender based violence and HIV/AIDS are very critical and calls for concerted effort to win the fight against these evils. Our target is to have judokas that lead by example and not perpetrators of violence be it in their homes.
“We believe our judokas have learnt a lot from this workshop and they will impart the knowledge to other people, that way we will win the fight,” Ng’uni said.
He was impressed with the increased number of judokas in Livingstone.
Ng”uni said since the revamping the sport in 2010, the number of judokas had now reached to more than 200.
