Chance to return to school

-

By MUKOSELA KASALWE RESIDENTS of Justin Kabwe Ward in Mandevu will have a chance to improve their reading and writing skills following plans to open a night school in the area popularly known as ‘shibukeni.

Patriotic Front area councillor Teddy Mwaba said the purpose of the night school was to develop a culture of reading so as to increase the Patriotic Front’s longterm investment in its citizens through education.

He said education was an enabler and a number one priority for the ruling government saying it would make it easier for community members to better understand its policy issues.

In an interview, the civic leader was hopeful that with some level of education, members of the community would be able to grasp development issues and make informed decisions.

Mr Mwaba said the night school would target residents who may have dropped out of school due to various reasons or those interested in knowing how to read and write.

‘‘I am happy to announce to the community that very soon we are starting ‘shibukeni’ or night school to allow our fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters who dropped out of school to get back to school and learn how to read and write,’’ he said.

And Mr Mwaba said the award giving ceremony which saw more than 18 pupils receive various prizes at Justin Kabwe School last week would continue.

He said the move would act as a catalyst to enhance academic performance. He thanked the school management for coming up with the strategy to motivate pupils to excel in their studies.

Mr Mwaba urged other government and private schools in the ward to emulate Justin Kabwe School’s proactive strategy.
