Don’t use terror money, NGOs warned

- By MUYANI SHINJABALE

DO not let terror groups fund your organisations because Zambia is a peaceful country, National Revolution Party (NRP) spokesperson Dr Cosmo Mumba has warned.

Dr Mumba cautioned on the need for Zambians to fear the possibility of terrorists using non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the country.

This was in a reaction to a warning by the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services on NGOs to be aware of the financial aid they receive from unknown funders because it might be from terrorists.

In an interview with the Daily Nation yesterday Dr Mumba noted that a lot of NGOs were at high risk of being abused by terrorists.

He said this is because NGOs need a lot of funding for them to carry out their activities and produce the desired results and therefore fail to question the morals of their funders.

He stated that NGOs contact international movements to represent various causes and can therefore, fall prey to the terrorists’ schemes.

Dr Mumba said a number of NGOs have a tendency of lying about their financial activities making it hard to keep a clear record of their donors.

“NGOs have become a scarecrow over the few years unlike during the times of Presidents Kaunda and Chiluba when they were more regulated,” he said.

Dr Mumba advised the Ministry of Home Affairs to monitor and regulate NGOs in the country to prevent future havoc.

This was in a reaction to the earlier caution by the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Permanent Secretary on NGOs being aware of the financial aid they receive from unknown funders because it might be from terrorists.
