Take up fish farming, urges DC

-

A CATHOLIC priest in Siavonga has called on Zambians to love one another for genuine and true reconciliation to take place in the nation.

Delivering his homily to the parishioners during Sunday mass, St. Kalemba Catholic Church, assistant parish priest, Fr. Odious Mutinta said where there is love, there is reconciliation, peace and harmony.

Fr. Mutinta read from the book of Mathew 22:34-40: “but when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. Then one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, testing him and saying, teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?” And he answered, you shall love your neighbour as yourself.

He said a community where there was love, people lived in harmony without gossiping about one another.

Fr. Mutinta said it was only through love that the country could move forward away from the current situation of division and bickering.

The clergyman said in countries such as Sudan people were fighting and killing one another on tribal lines because of lack of love created by some few selfish individuals.

He urged Christians to pray for genuine peace in the country and extend their love to their enemies so that the harmony could return to the nation. Fr. Mutinta called on the parishioners not to only express Christian values while at church on Sunday but that should always carry the cross of Christ even in the community by showing love and care to the vulnerable in their localities. CHAVUMA residents have been urged to consider venturing into aquaculture as part of the diversification process.

District commissioner Benjamin Mufunga Mr. Mufunga said there was need for farmers to diversify from growing maize to fish farming.

He was speaking in an interview with National Agricultural Information Services (NAIS) during the fish cropping exercise in Chingi area in Chavuma District in North Western Province.

The District Commissioner further said government was geared to support farmers who wished to venture into aquaculture through the Citizen Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC).

“Government is ever always geared to support and empower fish farmers in the country. Like in Chavuma, farmers who are willing to engage in fish farming through CEEC are free to apply and change their lives in farming,” Mr. Mufunga said.

And speaking earlier, one of the beneficiaries Beauty Muhongo who received k90, 000 funding from CEEC for her aquaculture project praised CEEC for the support.

Ms. Muhongo further who harvested about 2000 kilogram of fish said she used the funds acquired from CEEC prudently.

Meanwhile, CEEC North Western Provincial Coordinator Philip Daka said organization had approved funding amounting to K90, 000 to various fish farmers in the district. Mr.Daka added that CEEC was promoting aquaculture in Chavuma because there was potential for the growth of fish farming in the area which has plenty of water bodies.
