SDGs awareness key to improved trade
By CHITE MTONGA SENSITIZATION on sustainable development goals is strategic to improving trade and investment in the region, the Common Market for East and Southern Africa (COMESA) has said.
COMESA assistant director general Dr Kipyego Cheluget said that awareness of the 17 United Nations Sustainable goals was important for improving trade and investment in the region.
He said the popularisation of the SDGs would lead to governments in the region committing themselves to realising the goals.
Speaking when flagging off cyclists who are raising awareness on SDGs by cycling from Zambia to Zimbabwe, Dr Cheluget congratulated the youths for taking an active role in sensitising people on the 17 SDGs.
“COMESA believes in empowering young people so we will support your cause of sensitising people on the SDGs and we know that the goals are important in improving trade and investment in the COMESA region,” he said.
Dr Cheluget said that COMESA was a strong believer in the SDGs and the important role it plays in transforming the world.
“We support this initiative, it is an exciting moment to see young people energised to popularise the 17 SDGs,” he said. And COMESA Director of Gender Mrs Beatrice Hamusonde applauded the young people for taking the initiative to popularize the SDGs.
She praised the only woman in the team of cyclists for her confidence to take part in the trip, noting that this was a strong statement on the place of gender equity in all aspects of social economic development.
