Chunga Bridge rehab to ease business
REHABILITATION works have started on the Chunga Bridge which has been in a deplorable state in the past two years.
The bridge was a risk to residents as well as those from Chibombo and Lusaka district who use it. Once rehabilitated, the bridge will help ease business and movement of people between Chibombo and Lusaka.
Speaking during a site visit, Mwembeshi Ward 27 councillor Kelvin Kaunda said he was impressed with the rehabilitation works on the bridge being undertaken by the Road Development Agency (RDA).
“We are extremely happy and impressed with what we have found on the ground we are happy with the workmanship and the commitment shown by RDA and the works are progressing very well,” Mr Kaunda said.
Mr. Kaunda said the local people had been requesting for the bridge to be worked on because it was not safe for use by people and vehicles
“This stream normally gets flooded and with the way the bridge is, it is actually a risk to people’s lives,” he said.
The civic leader said the bridge was important because it connects Chibombo and Lusaka district.
He said the completion of the bridge would help improve the business for peasant farmers around the area as they would now be able to transport their produce to Lilanda, George compound and other surrounding communities.
Meanwhile RDA trainee technician Mahlon Simwinga says the works on the bridge were progressing on very well with RDA being the main contractor of the bridge.
We are the main constructor of the bridge, we have what we call in house operations and works so this is been done under that account. We do not to hire a big contractor we use are own engineers from RDA,” he said.
Mr. Simwinga said works which started early this September would be completed in three weeks’ time before the onset of the rains.
