Kabwe's first K4m modern bus station opens next month
THE first ever K4 million modern bus station since the defunct United Buses of Zambia (UBZ) is set to open in Kabwe next month.
Kabwe Municipal Council acting public relations officer Gwen Mafyenko said once completed, the facility would accommodate about 240 local buses and reduce congestion in the central business district (CBD).
Ms Mafyenko said the council had also introduced revenue discs for public transporters servicing local routes and surrounding districts to be using the facility.
Ms Mafyenko said the discs which have security features were expected to go into operation by December 1 when the bus station would be opened to the public.
Ms Mafyenko said the project was aimed at improving the transport system in the district as no public transporter would be allowed to operate without the disc.
“The council is going to work with bus drivers in identifying bus stops where people would be dropped off and picked up from,” said Ms Mafyenko.
She said the Road Transport and Safety Agency and Zambia Police would be engaged in the project to help control the situation at loading and offloading points within the CBD and town area.
Ms Mafyenko said minibus operators were being sensitised on the use of the discs and registration has since started.
The new facility was expected to increase revenue for the local authority which has been struggling to collect funds from private bus stations at Mukuyu, Vywalika and Brimas.
