Rains destroy 40 houses in Chongwe

By JOHN KOMBE MORE than 40 houses collapsed after a heavy downpour in Kampekete village in Manyika ward of Chongwe.

Chongwe Member of Parliament Japhen Mwakalombe, who confirmed the calamity, describes it as unfortunat­e.

“But we are moving in to alleviate the suffering of the affected families,

“The incident happened on Wednesday night on the 15th of November. No life was lost in the misfortune" Mr. Mwakalombe said.

Mr. Mwakalombe, who is Lusaka Province minister visited the affected households and expressed sadness at the happening.

“We must find ways of helping them so that we avert resultant problems. We must help them to rebuild their shelters,” he said

The minister told the Daily Nation that the residents must be assured of the government's support which was mobilising resources and materials such as roofing sheets.

“We are working round the clock. We will make sure that the victims are cared for. The government of President Lungu is compassion­ate and is determined to respond positively to issues of this nature” Mr Mwakalombe said.

Chongwe councillor, Runner Shiyala described the situation as very unfortunat­e. He thanked the government for the help which was being mobilised for the affected families.

"The rains have just started and so this problem requires the quickest of actions. We also need to assess other houses which could be in danger and try to find ways of protecting against such disasters, Mr Shiyala said.
