ECZ needs new exam rules – ZNUT

-

By KALOBWE BWALYA EXAMINATION Council of Zambia (ECZ) should consider revised examination rules and come up with new ones that will eliminate the continuous examination malpractices, Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT) secretary-general Newman Bubala has said.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, Mr Bubala said the union was saddened by the number of pupils who were found cheating during examinations especially that it was year in and year out and it seemed nothing was being done to end the practice.

Mr Bubala said it was unfortunate that reports of examination leakages had continued to be high despite the measures that the union and ECZ had put in place to curb the vice.

Mr Bubala said there was need to find a lasting solution to the practice because leaving the matter in the hands of law enforcement agencies was not an ultimate solution to prevent a recurrence.

“There a lot of concerns and what we have suggested is that stakeholders, such as ECZ, Ministry of Education, Security committee and other stakeholders, we review and find the causes because the challenge was year in year out concerning the leakages, so I am pretty sure that ECZ should come up with solution and move forward,” said Mr Bubala.

He said it was sad that the vice was not coming to an end, therefore it was a matter of urgency that all stakeholders find a lasting solution.

Mr Bubala warned teachers against engaging in such practices because they were retrogressive to the education system and national development in general.

“We totally condemn teachers and pupils who were involved in examination leakages because the conduct is against the policy of the teaching profession.

“As a union we are deeply saddened by the reported cases of examination malpractices and it worries us much especially when we see that the number of cases involving examination leakages continues to rise,” Mr Bubala said.
