WATER FIRM TARGETS GOOD SANITATION
Western Water and Sewerage Company says it has placed the improvement of sanitation among its top priorities to ensure that more people have access to clean water and proper sewerage coverage.
In a statement made available to ZANIS in Solwezi today, Company Public Relations Officer, Barbara Sianyabo says proper waste water management is important though it is considered a taboo to openly and publicly discuss it.
Ms Sianyabo said few people plan and invest in safely collecting, treating and disposing of waste matter which is produced by all human beings from various households and industrial activities.
"This year, we recognise that humanity has one thing in common, the call of nature. It is important that safe and proper disposal of body waste is given the attention it deserves," she said.
Ms. Sianyabo said the public should think about proper waste disposal each time they eat or drink something in order to achieve sustainable development goal number six of ensuring clean, safe and adequate water as well as sanitation services for all by 2030.
Ms. Sianyabo said the rest of the population in the province depends on onsite sanitation such as septic tanks, ventilated improved toilets (VIPS), traditional pit latrines and open defecation to answer the call of nature.
Ms. Sianyabo said the company was working with other stake holders such as the Netherland government to design, construct and later if funds permit, construct a centralised sewer system in Solwezi.
She called upon all stakeholders including customers to consider good sanitation as key to economic social development of any society.
