Police inertia angers church

... For failing to probe gay indaba exposed in Livingstone

- By AARON CHIYANZO

INCOMPETENCE by the police following their failure to probe a shameful homosexual “indaba” despite calls for investigation by Religious Affairs minister, Godfridah Sumaili is seriously annoying, Bishops Council of Zambia (BCZ) secretarygeneral Able Kaela has charged.

Rev Kaela said that the incompetency levels being shown by the country’s investigative wings was worrisome and denting the image of the government.

He said that when an issue was exposed, the challenge remained with mandated institutions to see to it that it was corrected.

Rev Kaela said in an interview with the Daily Nation that he suspected that the laissez-faire attitude toward duty by most public servants was as a result of a mass infiltration of government institutions by the cartel.

He pointed out that there was no way shameful acts such as lesbianism and homosexuality could be ignored in Zambia, adding that they had the potential to befall calamities upon the country.

Rev Kaela reiterated that the levels of incompetence by enforcement officers was now annoying especially that even genuine calls for probes by senior officials were also being ignored.

“It’s sad that even calls by a minister were ignored, homosexuality brings wrath upon any nation that annoys God and for us we are a Christian nation. Laws should be enforced, but why should the police not do their work? This is annoying,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rev Kaela said that homosexuality could not be allowed to become a way of life in Zambia as that would bring confusion and bad luck upon the nation.

He said that a police shake up was inevitable if the laisser-faire attitude that had rocked the men and women in uniform was not done away with. Rev Kaela emphasised that the ineptitude being exhibited by public officers in vital government institutions was denting the image of the Head of State.

Meanwhile, when contacted for a comment, Zambia Police Service spokesperson Esther Katongo said that police in Southern Province were the ones to follow up the issue.

The southern commend however ignored any communication on the topic.

A secret gathering of gays and lesbians from different countries met in Livingstone for seven days at a prestigious hotel allegedly owned by a politician and a traditional leader.
