Demolition drive angers Monze traders
Monze, - SOME traders in Monze have complained over Monze District Council’s action to demolish their market structures without adequate warning.
Speaking to ZANIS yesterday Richard Daka noted that most salaula traders were taken by surprise to find their market structures razed by the council over the weekend. He complained that the local authority did not give the traders enough time for them to prepare for the demolition exercise which took place last Friday night. Mr Daka explained that traders had suggested to the local authority to give them time up to April next year in order for them to prepare for the demolition exercise. He said most traders got loans from the business community which they were expected to pay back. But Monze Council chairperson Bisha Munsaka maintained that the council is determined to bring sanity to the town which has been branded as the dirtiest in the country. He said the council would not relent in its efforts to ensure trading was done in a proper manner and that street vendors are removed to help keep the town clean and healthy And Monze Town Market Chairperson Kenneth Mweene said the majority of traders support the decision by the council to demolish market structures so that modern stalls are constructed. He noted that the local authority should be supported in its quest to bring about order and sanity in trading activities in the District.
