RESIDENTS TEAM UP TO WORK ON ROADS

- By CHIKUMBI KATEBE

THE Chazanga Self Help Project has taken shape with community-funded rehabilitation works to make the roads passable underway.

Chazanga Self Help Project interim secretary Stanslas Mukuka said over 100 households had come up with the project to help fill up furrows formed on the roads so as to help motorists access their houses.

Mr Mukuka said the area had remained undeveloped despite being made part of Lusaka city having initially being part of Mungule area in Central province.

“Our friends in Chaisa, Chawama and other compounds across Lusaka have paved walkways and tarred roads with street lights, except for our area here in Chazanga which remains with huge potholes and furrows formed in the last rainy season.

“Our roads are in such a bad state that even an ambulance or even the famous fire tenders cannot drive through in case of any emergency,” Mr Mukuka said.

Mr Mukuka explained that the community had mobilised themselves with an agreed contribution of at least K100 per household to be used for hire of transport and acquire rabble for filling up the potholes or furrows on the inner roads.

He said the project had received massive support from the community and promised to ensure that the committee chosen to oversee the processes worked to the satisfaction of the community.

“Now the community has come out for a weekend of manual work towards possible repairs to the roads in the area after we hired a truck to collect the debris coming from the Lusaka-Ndola dual carriageway works which we are now using to fill up the potholes.

“At least if we collect a reasonable heap, we can all get busy to level up the surface to help ease access beyond the main Chazanga road,” he said.

The community has called on the area councilor, Christopher Shakafuswa to come to the aid of the community by providing other necessary equipment to improve road status to enable vehicles pass without getting stuck.

Mr Mukuka said over 100 people including women and children had turned up for the community programme which was scheduled to last three days from November 24 to 26 2017.
