Sex party: Teaching council takes hardline stance

- By CHIKUMBI KATEBE

THE Teaching Council of Zambia has hailed education authorities in Mkushi for taking quick action by suspending four teachers caught up in a sex party with pupils at Mkushi Day Boarding School.

TCZ spokesperson Ngoza Malonga said they were concerned with the reported school sex party organised by the teachers at a private location outside school premises in Mkushi district, Central Province involving five female pupils, believed to be minors.

“In as far as we appeal to relevant stakeholders to be objective on this matter which borders on morality, we thank the education authorities in Mkushi for quickly acting on the matter.

“As TCZ we have taken keen interest in the matter, and follow up shall be made to ensure that justice prevails,” she said.

Ms Malonga however disclosed that the mere transfer of the four teachers to other districts was not sufficient reprimand for their actions, as it would just be transferring the problem away from Mkushi.

She said a mere transfer for such serious criminal offences may not help solve the problem and that the council would not condone such behaviour by the teachers that would bring the reputation of the teaching profession into disrepute.

“It has also come to our attention that three of the four teachers were from Mkushi Boarding Secondary School, while the other teacher is from Chalata Boarding Secondary School.

“It is indeed very worrying to learn that the five pupils, from Mkushi Boarding Secondary School, who were involved in the scandal, are believed to be minors,” she explained.

The council has charged that teachers ought to be role models for the children they teach and not take advantage of the vulnerable learners.

Mrs Malonga has called upon both male and female teachers to uphold the highest level of morality and integrity in the discharge of their duty, by instilling moral lessons in the children instead of destroying the innocence.

She said the school sex party that took place in Mkushi, involving the four teachers and five pupils was saddening especially that it was just a few months after the Police in Lusaka arrested over 70 teenagers at a sex party in Woodlands.

“In this regard we wish to remind all teachers in the country to adhere to the Code of Ethics of public service workers,” she said.
