Clergyman defends church on medication

- By MUYANI SHINJABALE

IN AS much as we emphasise on divine intervention from God, we should not discourage people from taking any kind of medication.

Evangelical Youth Alliance Executive Director, Reverend Moses Lungu said his organisation regarded medical treatment as a very cardinal thing for any individual.

Mr. Lungu stated that the official position of the church should not be misunderstood and misinterpreted by malicious individuals who wanted to use the church as a means to mislead people.

“We have the Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) that works in collaboration with churches across the country to ensure that there is adequate training within the church as well as offer them enough information on 100 per cent adherence to medication and treatment.

“The church also has a social organisation that has a systematic social approach to encourage people to undertake treatment.

“Some individuals have a tendency of distorting the church’s image by stopping people from taking medication which rubs off badly on the entire clergy,” he noted.

Mr. Lungu said the Catholic Church had the response programme to deal with such issues while the Pentecostal Church also had the response to HIV and AIDs programme led by Bishop Joshua Banda.

He stated that the church conducted training for the young people in the Young Treatment Support, Biblical Approach and many others.

Rev. Lungu added that information and help was not only focused on medication guidance but also over the nutritional aspects as they needed to be emphasised to help the people who took those medications to take them the right way.
