Stanbic wins Global award

- By CHITE MTONGA

THE Global Banking Alliance (GBA) for Women has presented Stanbic Bank Zambia with an award for its programme dedicated to supporting female business leaders.

Stanbic launched Anakazi Banking in April, an initiative that seeks to support women to excel in commerce after becoming the first Zambian financial institution to join the GBA.

GBA chief executive officer Inez Murray said the organisation was delighted to inform Stanbic Bank Zambia that it won the GBA New Programme Award, given to members who have started a programme in the previous 12 months.

The award was presented to Stanbic bank during a gala dinner at the GBA summit in London last month.

And Stanbic chief executive Charles Mudiwa in a statement said Stanbic Bank recognised the huge role that Zambian women played in the country’s development and sought to launch a project exclusively for them.

“For us, this is not just part of our corporate social responsibility, but it is part of our strong belief in amplifying the role that women play in our economy,” Mr Mundiwa said.

Recently, Stanbic’s Anakazi Banking also received a top award from the African Women’s Entrepreneurship Programme.

The Anakazi Banking drive was launched earlier this year to increase access for women to finance and capacity building activities.

It includes training, mentoring and networking events to build knowledge in management and access to markets, and help to establish businesses.

GBAs main objectives are built around the theme: “Catalysing growth in the female economy, leveraging the power of connection.”

Besides engaging best practice panels and networking opportunities, this year’s event kicked off with the “GBA master class, an introduction to the women’s market and EBRD women in business discussion panel,” focusing on the cases of three highly successful GBA best practice banks and the work European Bank for Reconstruction and Development banks are doing around the world to support the growth of women entrepreneurs.
