TEACHER STAFFING DRIVE RAISES EYEBROWS

- By LINDA SOKO TEMBO

THE just-ended teacher recruitment by the Ministry of General Education was not fairly conducted Kaputa district area Member of Parliament Maxas Ng’onga has said.

Mr. Ng’onga explained that the people in his constituency were saddened because only a few qualified teachers had been picked from his district and the rest were from the urban centres who used Kaputa only as an entry point.

He said that when it came to teacher’s recruitment the district did not receive the adequate number of teachers it needed.

In an interview with the Daily Nation the law maker said that even those that they received in the district from the urban centers did not stay long as soon as they started working they would request for transfers away from Kaputa.

“Most urban teachers use Kaputa only as an entry point once they are selected normally they would not even go and stay there,” he said.

Mr. Ng’onga explained that out of the 30 teachers that the ministry had sent to Kaputa only six were from the district and the remaining 24 were from others areas.

“We are not even sure if they are going to stay that’s the challenge that we face people use Kaputa just to get a job.

“In a few months they start going back to where they came from taking the payroll and recruitment numbers and there after we remain without teachers. We still have a huge challenge with the teachers in the district,” he said.

The area Member of Parliament explained that the district had its own people who had gone to school and trained to be qualified teachers with diplomas and certificates and they were ready to be teachers in their district and would never run away as was the case with those from the cities.
