WE won the 2016 general elections and we want a new and independent electoral commission, says United Party for National Developed (UPND) president, Hakainde Hichilema.

Speaking during the UPND Central Province card renewal in Kabwe on Sunday, Mr Hichilema said the election petition still stands because as UPND they wanted the rule of law and human rights to prevail over the matter.

Mr Hichilema claimed that the UPND beat the Patriotic Front in Central Province during the last general elections, adding that those were the facts that some people have refused to accept because they were embarrassed to do so.

“I want to say once more that people misunderstand, they don’t want the facts because they are embarrassed with the facts. In Central Province the UPND won, we beat PF in Central Province, here, in the election,” said Mr Hichilema.

He said as UPND, they wanted a new and independent electoral commission because the current one was compromised.

The UPND leader also demanded the release of all imprisoned members of the party saying they didn’t commit any crime but were simply campaigning for their party.

He also stated that those that attacked UPND Central Province chairperson, Albert Chifita and went scot-free would pay when the time comes because the party had not forgotten and that they were known.

Mr Hichilema was accompanied by national chairperson, Mutale Nalumango, Mr Chifita, several members of Parliament, council chairpersons and councillors from Central Province.
