62 cheat death on Great East Road

By JOHN KOMBE SIXTY-TWO passengers survived an accident involving a Zambia/Malawi bus in Rufunsa district. The accident occurred in the early hours of Monday December, 11 2017.

Zambia Police spokespers­on, Ms. Esther Katongo confirmed the incident. She said the bus was heading east from Lusaka.

“We have received a report of a serious accident which occurred along Great East Road at Chite- malesa area at around 05:30 hours involving male, Kombe Kalonga of Lusaka driving a Zambia -Malawi bus, registrati­on number 1972,” the police spokespers­on said.

She further reported that the injured passengers were rushed to Chongwe hospital. “The accident occurred when the driver failed to negotiate a curve due to excessive speeding. He lost control of the bus and overturned,” she said. She further reported that no fatality was recorded and those who sustained injuries were rushed to Chongwe hospital.

Chongwe district hospital medical officer in-charge, Doctor Job Mwanza confirmed receiving the crew and survivors to the Daily Nation.

“We received 59 road traffic accident victims in the early hours of today. We examined and admitted them for observatio­n’s. 52 had minor injuries, 7 had serious injuries and of these, 2 have been referred go UTH and 5 to Levy Mwanawasa teaching hospital,” Dr. Mwanza said.

“I can confirm that, we have discharged 28 of the accident victims after examinatio­ns. These just had minor bruises, 24 are still being observed, but are stable and may be discharged by tomorrow. The driver and conductor are also admittedly in our hospital,” Dr. Mwanza said.
