Congress Party backs girls’ access to education

- By SANDRA MACHIMA

THE National Congress Party is keen to support the government in improving rural schools to have more girls’ access to education, its leader Peter Chanda has said.

Mr Chanda noted that better education for all, fight against early marriages and teenage pregnancies was inline with the 7th National Development Plan, without leaving anyone behind.

Mr Chanda implored Zambians to rise to the occasion and address matters concerning the girl-child's education, if Zambia was to develop.

He said it was the responsibility of each and every leader to shape the destiny of orphans by bringing smiles on their faces and treat them with utmost respect despite their status in society.

And Mr Chanda has committed to raise K60, 000 for desks, school materials and sinking of a borehole, and has also donated 50 pockets of cement and 46 roofing sheets to the Child Comfort Foundation towards the construction of one by two classroom block for Nyakabande Community School in Rufunsa.

Mr Chanda commended President Edgar Lungu for his commitment and fight against teenage pregnancies and early marriages.

He reiterated that President Lungu equally wanted the vulnerable children in Rufunsa to have a good education.

"President Lungu's commitment and desire to promoting girl-child education is evidenced in his recognition as ambassador for child education in Africa," Mr Chanda said.

Mr Chanda said the Congress Party was committed to ensuring that girls and women were empowered especially in the education sector.
