Lack of bus bays setbacks cited

- By JACKSON MAPAPAYI

THE Zambia Police in Solwezi is concerned over lack of bus bays on the expanded Independence Avenue in the district.

Commissioner of police Auxensio Daka observed that the design of the road does not take into consideration the establishment of pickup and drop off points for passengers especially in the town centre.

Mr Daka noted that the situation if not rectified would lead to a huge problem as bus operators would be stopping anywhere on the road to pick and drop passengers.

"This may take us back to what we were avoiding by modernising the road," Mr Daka said.

He said there was urgent need to reconsider establishment of bus bays to avoid traffic accidents.

Mr Daka appealed to relevant authorities in the district to urgently look into the matter and have it rectified.

He however thanked government for modernising the road infrastructure particularly in Solwezi.

He said traffic management in the district had been a nightmare but that soon it would be a thing of the past.

And Mr Daka has called upon members on the public to pay special attention to their personal security and safety during the festival season.

He said as people go about their businesses, even criminals are targeting them and they should not give them opportunity by being vulnerable.

He also warned motorists against alcohol abuse while driving. He said the police and the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) would be in full swing arresting all drank drivers during this festival season and beyond.
