Lumumba Road neglected

- Concerned citizen. Ms Chikondi. Kabwe

Dear Editor,

THE adage prevention is better than cure may sound like an irrelevant cliché but it is still important.

In Zambia, there is a tendency to wait for a problem to grow before being acted upon. Unfortunately, the trend is also common even in key government institutions, including local authorities.

Preventing a problem from getting out of hand is not only easier to resolve but also cheaper than it would once it grows out of hand or bigger.

For instance, why is the Road Development Agency waiting for Lumumba Road to be completely damaged before they can start working on it? For all I know, plans to work on this road were announced early this year but nothing has been done yet.

In the meantime, the road is deteriorating and becoming a menace because of the potholes which are forcing motorists to swerve unnecessarily hence increasing chances of accidents.

This is a very busy road considering that even cargo trucks use the same route to join Great North Road at Mandevu Junction. As I said, prevention is better than cure, so the sooner the road is worked on the better.

The same applies to the issues of land. Why let people build illegally then come and demolish afterwards only to get entangled in legal battles?

Let’s learn to solve problems as and when they start than wait until they grow out of proportion because it becomes more costly be it socially or economically.
