Cops to tackle Mtendere rising crime

-

By MOSES SINJWALA MTENDERE compound residents in collaboration with the police are to come up with measures to curb the escalating theft and attacks by the notorious group the fluffy boys.

Mtendere ward 30 councillor Watson Mtonga said in an interview with the Daily Nation that the situation in the area was not conducive as attacks and thefts on residents by the fluffy boys even in broad day light had increased.

Mr. Mtonga said in view of this, he had held meetings with the police leadership in Mtendere to come up with security measures that might help end the escalating crime in the area.

He said the police command in the area had assured him of intensifed patrols and that robust security measures would be be enforced to ensure that the fluffy boys and other criminals faced the law.

“I moan with the residents in my ward over the escalating crime rate that has crept in the area where homes are being broken into on a daily basis and with the coming of this festival season there is so much fear by the people of Mtendere who are coming to my office complaining over the attacks and theft.

“But people should have no fear because the police is on the ground to ensure their safety and that of their properties.” Mr. Mtonga said.He added that in view of the prevailing high crime rate, some money fund from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), had been allocated towards the construction of a modern police station to boost the staffing levels.

He said the existing number of police officers was inadequate to effectively police the entire Mtendere compound, one of the most highly populated compounds in the city.

“We hope that the new modern police station will help boost the morale of the officers and create a sense of relief and security for the people of Mtendere compound. With the new station we will be looking at least close to 30 police officers, unlike the current police post which is dilapidated and so demotivating for the officers.” Mr. Mtonga said.
