OVER 100 SHALLOW WELLS BURIED IN MAZYOPA
LUSAKA Deputy Mayor Chilando Chitangala says the burying of over 100 shallow wells in Mazyopa compound will help avert cholera, especially now that residents have come to appreciate the measure.
Ms Chitangala said it was discovered that cholera was being spread through a germ found in the water of the shallow wells and that through collaborative efforts through her office and the ward committee, it was agreed that the shallow wells be buried.
She said residents of Mazyopa compound had now appreciated the decision after initially refusing to allow council officials to bury the shallow wells whose contaminated water they were using to wash clothes and plates.
In an interview at the weekend, the civic leader expressed hope that the spread of cholera would be minimised with the burying of the shallow wells.
Ms Chitangala said water and chlorine was being distributed in Mazyopa compound after all the wells were buried.
“I believe the burying of shallow wells in Mazyopa compound which was the worst hit by the scourge will help stop the spread of cholera. This is because the water was contaminated.
“I am glad that residents have come to appreciate this measure because at first they resisted the move seeing that they use the water in their daily activities,” she said.
She said it was important for residents at an individual level to exhibit high levels of cleanliness.
Ms Chitangala said it was vital for residents to keep their surroundings clean and avoid the indiscriminate disposal of garbage.
She said the local authority would not take lightly to anyone found throwing garbage anyhow as that was one of the major causes of cholera.
