Ignorant politicians are a danger to society - Mumba

- By CHITE MTONGA

OPPOSITION political party leaders should research extensively before advising government on national issues because politicians can easily mislead citizens, National Revolution Party (NRP) president Cosmo Mumba has said.

Mr Mumba said the current trend of mere politicking was not helping Government to develop the country

Mr Mumba said political party leaders would slowly lose respect if they continued issuing irrelevant statements for the sake of recognition.

He said political parties were supposed to offer checks and balances unlike just condemning everything that Government did.

Mr Mumba said opposition political party leaders where tasked to hold the government accountable on issues of development and not on baseless allegations and slander.

He said politicians should have the decency to be truthful because many citizens looked up to them for representation.

“We should not just be insulting the government and the President, we in the opposition should offer solutions to problems, and criticise constructively not just making noise so that people can notice that we exist,” Mr Mumba said.

He said politicians should research and follow up matters if they were to contribute positively to national development

Mr Mumba said opposition party leaders should realise that the statements they made now would affect them if they were elected as head of State.

“Politics are not meant for attacking those who are in power, and my colleagues should understand that one day it might be them who will be President so it is always helpful just to remain factual and discuss matters that are of national benefit,” he said.

Mr Mumba said President Lungu should be given chance to deliver upon his campaign promises unlike always being a recipient of ridicule from opposition political parties.
