Cholera sensitisat­ion campaign launched in Garden Compound

A SENSITISAT­ION campaign against the sale of fresh foods to avoid the spread of cholera has been launched in Kanele’s Garden Township of Mandevu Constituen­cy, says Ngwerere Ward 19 Councillor Adrian Banda.

Mr Banda expressed happiness that a sensitisat­ion campaign against the sale of fresh foods with traders in the area to stem the spread of cholera has received a positive response.

He said a consultati­ve meeting with the resident doctor of Chipata Level One Hospital and the director of health from the Ministry of Health regarding the cholera situation in Garden was held over the same subject.

In an update yesterday, the civic leader said a directive through the minister of Health Dr Chitalu Chilufya was issued to strengthen personnel employed to bury shallow wells as well as step up the distributi­on of chlorine.

Mr Banda said 100 youths have been engaged to speed up the burying of shallow wells and distribute chlorine to residents.

“We had a sensitisat­ion meeting with traders in Kanele who sell fresh foods to stop immediatel­y to curb the spread of cholera in the area and the response was successful,” he said.

He said building from the existing water tanks installed in Kanele, Mtonyo and Chiyangeya­nge, 10 more water tanks of 10,000 litre capacity were installed at various points in Garden Township.

Mr Banda said additional communal taps were installed and that residents were able to access clean and safe water.

He said through his office all historical garbage were removed in all the zones and that a robust system had been put in place to see to it that each and every evening garbage would be collected.

Mr Banda said the move had been agreed by all waste management companies that operated within Ngwerere Ward.
