Kabwe ward in maternity wing SOS

- By KETRA KALUNGA

A LOCAL leader of Kabwe's Kawama Ward had appealed to government to commission the maternity wing at the area clinic.

Lackson Mafoko said lack of a maternity wing at Kawama Clinic was a big challenge to expectant mothers as they were made to cover distances of about 5 kilometers to Kabwe General Hospital which was the nearest health facility.

Speaking when area MP Sydney Mushanga held a community meeting in Kawama, Councillor Mafoko said lack of the facility was also putting expectant mothers at risk because they should usually deliver at night which was not safe for making trips.

“I am appealing to government through you our minister and area MP to commission the maternity wing. Our expectant mothers are having a challenge when the time to deliver comes and this problem usually happens at night. They are made to cover the distance of about 5 kilometers at night to Kabwe General Hospital which is not safe,” said Mr Mafoko.

He however commended the PF government for putting up a maternity section as the clinic as one of its first project after coming into power in 2011.

And Mr Mushanga said he would write to the provincial medical officer to find out why the opening of the maternity section which was completed early this year has delayed.

The Bwacha law maker who is Central province minister assured the people in his constituency that the maternity section would soon be commissioned after his office engaged staff at the Provincial medical office.
