Kitwe DC warns civil servants to improve their work culture in 2018

- By ROGERS KALERO

KITWE District Commissioner Binwell Mpundu has warned civil servants to improve their work culture in 2018 and ensure that they report for work on time as opposed to reporting late and demanding to be paid salaries on time.

Mr Mpundu said he has always been saddened by the poor work culture of most civil servants reporting for work at their own time, hence his timely warning for them to change their attitude in the new year.

Mr. Mpundu was on December 27 annoyed by the late coming of officers in the Department of Social Welfare, Agriculture and Labour who were found reporting one hour late.

Mr Mpundu said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that, people were insulting President Edgar Lungu and government because of the poor work culture of the civil servants.

"As we enter 2018, I would like to see a change in our work culture. The work culture of most civil servants is bad. People end up ridiculing President Lungu and his government because of the bad work culture of most civil servants who report for work at their own time.

"They report at their own time and find scores of people at their offices waiting to attend to them. So to members of the public, this kind of attitude means, you don't care about them. Officers should report for work at the right time so that they can attend to people," Mr Mpundu said.

Mr Mpundu said government officers who were reporting for work late with impunity, only went to confirm the perception of the bad work culture which the public has about the officers working in various departments in government.

He said he was annoyed to find that officers from the Department of Social Welfare, Agriculture and Labour were reporting for work one-hour late when members of the public waiting to be served by the officers had already gathered at their offices.

Mr Mpundu said it was surprising that most government officers who have a bad work culture and were always coming late for work, were the ones complaining about delayed salaries.

He said it was sad that some government officers were only reporting for work to do nothing, but wait to get paid and get loans from financial lending institutions.

"Reporting late for work and coming for work doing nothing, but waiting to get paid for not doing nothing is day-light robbery. This should be stopped. We need to serve the people so that people appreciate the works of the government.

"Government and President Edgar Lungu are being insulted because of people who are not doing their jobs. We cannot allow this. People should be paid for doing their job and not for doing nothing," He said.
