Lions calls for service to community

- By KETRA KALUNGA

IT is important that before we celebrate the coming of the new year, we must give a service to the community, says Lions Club International (LCI) District 413 Governor, Jessica Choobe.

Speaking during the cleaning of Kabwe's Mukuyu Heritage Site on Saturday, Lion Moobe said the newly Chartered Kabwe-Mukuyu Lions Club (KMLC) decided to clean the site which has a lot of garbage due to a lot of vending taking place around the area.

Lion Choobe said as LCI they decided to offer a service to the Kabwe community by cleaning the Makuyu Heritage Site before officially handing over the Charter and Scroll to KabweMukuyu and Kapiri Hilltop Lion Clubs that have been weaned by Kabwe Lions club.

Lion Choobe said with the outbreak of cholera KMLC, saw it fit to clean the heritage site in line with one of its core project of looking after the environment as a preventive measure.

"A lot of vending is being done at Mukuyu Heritage Site which has been turned into a vending place, so we took it upon ourselves to clean it up to prevent a cholera outbreak and also preserve the site," said Lion Choobe

She added that during the cleaning exercise, vendors were also sensitized about the need to take care of the garbage.

Lion Choobe said KMLC has entered into a partnership with Zambia Railways Limited to provide drums that would be used as garbage bins within the central business district of Kabwe.

She said three drums have been handed over to the Kabwe Municipal Council to be used as garbage bins at the Mukuyu Heritage Site.

Speaking earlier, United Street Vendors Foundation Cooperative Society president, Teddy Sinkala said the cleaning of streets by street vendors was a directive from President Edgar Lungu aimed at keeping the trading places clean.

Mr Sinkala said the previous government never engaged street vendors in cleaning the trading places, a situation that made it difficult for them to handle the issue of street vending.
