Owas opens year with ‘Hang’

- By TERENCE MISELO

Zambian award-winning filmmaker, producer and director Owas Ray Mwape begins this year with a presentation of a new movie dubbed ‘Hang’. This is a film he scripted during his time in prison and believes it is now right to present the project to the public. “When I wrote this script as I sat in a jail cell, I knew I had an idea to die for. Talented Adorah Ad (Mwape) created some characters to it and ‘Hang’ was born,” remarked Owas in announcing the movie that hits local screens soon. ‘Hang,’ is a comedy drama relating to some social issues affecting most Zambian families. It tells a story of a Zambian artiste and youth Josh Nkabebelapo real name Maxwell Mwape who is actually the lead actor. Nkabebelapo fails to find a job while his wife Dorcus Chilila thinks he is nothing in society and resorts to cheating with a Katondo Street land dealer. With that pressure on his shoulders, Josh decides to hang himself on a land that is in dispute, attracting a TV crew and various citizens among them a community pastor who wants to buy the same land for his church. Josh holds everyone in panic with his demands or else he will jump to hang himself in full view of everyone else and live on TV. A government minister rushes to the scene to save the day in a serious exchange of words. Will he manage to save him? The suspense is revealed as the film comes to the local cinema soon. ‘Hang’ was written and directed by Owas Mwape and apart from Maxwell, stars Henry BJ Phiri, Evans Nkoya, Philomena Nyirenda, Joy Perpetual Mwape, Dorcas Chilila and was produced by Adorah Mwape.
