Luapula on cholera alert

…Over 200 shallow water wells buried as preventive measures-Chilangwa

WE have buried 200 shallow water wells as preventive measures to avoid the outbreak of cholera in Luapula province, Provincial Minister Nickson Chilangwa has said.

Mr Chilangwa said the Province was on high alert following recorded cases of cholera on the Copperbelt.

He disclosed that the provincial health office was already looking at the preventive measures to take to avoid the spread of the epidemic in Luapula province.

Mr Chilangwa who is Kawambwa central PF member of parliament said he was already in talks with the Provincial Health Office on the best way of preventing the outbreak of cholera in Luapula province.

"For example, the Mansa Municipal Council has buried over 200 shallow water wells as one of prevention measures.

“I have been talking to the Provincial Health Office and we are on high alert in the wake of Copperbelt recording cases of cholera," he disclosed.

The provincial minister said cholera was not new to Luapula Province adding that his office had dealt with the outbreaks before and that it was ready to do so with more caution this time around.

And Mr Chilangwa said his office was wellinform­ed that some towns on the Copperbelt like Kitwe and Ndola have recorded cases, adding that he will ensure there were no spill overs.
