Cholera prone areas in clean up drive

By CHITE MTONGA RESIDENTS in cholera affected arears in Lusaka have started rigorous cleaning of their compounds to avoid further spread of the disease and improve general sanitary conditions.

A check by the Daily Nation around selected compounds in Lusaka district found streets, drainages, footpaths and house surroundin­gs cleaned.

In Garden compound, one of the areas affected by cholera, people of all ages participat­ed in the cleaning and maintenanc­e of the area.

The infamous Pendela Road in Garden compound which had not received attention for several years was seen being worked on by residents. The residents cleared the clogged drainage systems along the road and all filth was heaped at a central awaiting collection by council authoritie­s.

“We are cleaning our surroundin­gs today and all major roads in the area because we do not want to have dirty surroundin­gs anymore with the outbreak of this disease.

“We can no longer wait for council to come and work on the drainage system, so we have joined hands and going forward we intend to be doing this more frequently, ”Mr Clement Bwalya a resident of the area said.

The residents have taken charge of the situation with individual households sharing tasks to clean the area.

And in Kanyama compound the situation was the same as several residents were seen cleaning the streets and drainages.

Kanyama residents had also cleared dirt in surroundin­g bars and places near the markets.
