OBSERVE CURFEW, KANYAMA RESIDENTS TOLD

-

By LINDA SOKO TEMBO KANYAMA Member of Parliament Elizabeth Phiri has urged residents in her constituency to observe the curfew declared by Government in the area on Sunday. Ms Phiri said government was trying to protect its citizens in Kanyama because it was the epicenter of the cholera outbreak in the country.

She said people of Kanyama were in the habit of going back to the streets after 18:00hrs to trade against the directive by government.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, Ms Phiri explained residents were not complying with the government’s directives on the prevention of cholera, adding that’s why government had declared the curfew in the area.

“What has brought the curfew in Kanyama is because people are not complying with the directive given by government they said let’s not sell they continue selling.

“Let’s clean. There is less cleaning and more of selling so this is why it is prolonging this cholera outbreak. By now it would have been over if people had complied,” she said.

Ms Phiri said her government was trying to do everything possible to ensure that cholera was eradicated country wide and that President Lungu came on board to ensure the cleaning exercise was done.

Ms Phiri explained that the curfew period will also help reduce cases of thefts in Kanyama adding that it will be very difficult for thieves to move and whoever will be found moving will be arrested.

The MP said she was aware that people in her constituency depended on buying and selling of produce.

“But what will it profit a marketeer if the marketeers inadvertently becomes a serial killer because what they sell is contaminated and they kill the masses who buy from them? After all they even put their own lives at risk,” she said.
