- By JACK MAPAPAYI

AS PART of logistical support towards the prevention of cholera within Solwezi district, Kansanshi Mining Company has donated 50 tons of hydrated lime which is about 2,500 X 25 kilograms bags valued at K70, 000.

Speaking during cholera preparedness meeting at the Boma conference Hall today, Kansanshi Mine environmental manager Arnold Malambo said the lime would be used to disinfect pit latrines within Solwezi.

Mr Malambo stated that the amount of lime was targeting about 10,000 households in the district. ‘’In terms of cholera prevention, as a mining company we have decided to join hands with the district health office as well as Solwezi Municipal council by donating 50 tons of lime towards the prevention of cholera in the district. ‘’So that is just part of the support besides the other support which we have given like fuel for information dissemination,’’ Mr Malambo said. He said Kansanshi mine holds a strategic position within the district hence the decision to join hands in the prevention of the pandemic.

He said the mining company was the biggest employer in the district with more than 10,000 people on site. ‘’Therefore, for us this becomes very critical because we know that an outbreak of just one person could lead production being disturbed and also it will just end up disturbing the morale within the mine. ‘’And therefore to make sure our work force is motivated we have to ensure that we put in place necessary inventions,’’ he said.

And North Western Province Minister Richard Kapita has called for team work through multi-disciplinary approaches to avoid to the outbreak of the pandemic in Solwezi and the entire province.
