- By JOHN KOMBE

Chongwe member of Parliament, Mr. Japhen Mwakalombe has urged the residents of Chongwe not to politicise cholera preventive measures.

Mr. Mwakalombe made the call when he toured the district to check on the cholera situation. He also took part in the disinfection exercise of the central business district’s main market before going to other areas.

Mr. Mwakalombe called on the residents of Chongwe not to bring politics into the prudent measures aimed at preventing the spread of the disease.

“This is a time to fight the spread of cholera and not to be political. You gave us the mandate to protect your lives and not to put you at risk. We are aware that some measures may be tough, but all this is meant to protect your lives,” he said.

Mr. Mwakalpmbe who is also Lusaka province minister called on the people to cooperate with the health personnel who were working tirelessly to avert any cholera threats.

“This disease knows no boundaries and must be fought with collective effort. We must rise above politics and address this matter with a sense of patriotism as one Zambia and one nation.

Those who may bring politics into this may just be endangering the lives of the public,” he emphasised.

Mr. Mwakalombe assured the marketeers who were being relocated to legal trading areas that, no one would be left to suffer.

“These measures are meant to ensure that you trade in areas that conform to public health standards. Good sanitary conditions are key in any trading area.

It is for this reason that this government does not play politics when such a cause beckons. We are here to work with you in this fight regardless of your political affiliation,” Mr. Mwakalombe stressed.
