Chisokone marketeers clear garbage

- By SIABANA KELVIN

MOUNTAINS of uncollected garbage would now be a thing of the past at Kitwe’s Chisokone market following the successful cleaning exercise.

Kitwe District Commissioner, Binwell Mpundu said if all stakeholders got involved in the cleaning exercise, the market could be the cleanest on the Copperbelt and issues of waterborne diseases could be a thing of the past.

The District Commissioner however noted that the cleaning exercise done at Chisokone Market was conducted in good faith in order to remove the unnecessary garbage that had accumulated at the market for many years.

Mr Mpundu said it was the responsibility of every resident in Kitwe and all the marketeers to ensure that the place was clean and conducive for business to flourish.

The District Commissioner said with the advent of cholera that had ravaged the nation's capital, the Copperbelt and other parts of Zambia, there was need for the people to take preventive measures by adhering to the hygiene principles all the time.

The district Commissioner said his office and the local authority, the Zambia Police and the Armed Forces were working together to ensure that the uncollected garbage in various parts of Chisokone market were collected.

"The fight against cholera can be won if different stakeholders at any level in the district dedicate their time and resources in ensuring that the preventive measures are put in place by following the health tips from the health experts on how to combat the epidemic,“Mr Mpundu said.
