MALANJI INTERVENES IN CBU IMPASSE
JOE Malanji, the PF Kwacha Member of Parliament, has intervened in the impasse over delayed salaries at the Copperbelt University-CBU-.
Mr. Malanji, who was recently appointed Foreign Affairs Minister, has pledged to commit himself to help resolve the problem of delayed salaries at CBU by engaging relevant stakeholders including banks like ZANACO.
Mr Malanji said more than K800, 000 was needed to rehabilitate the worn-out ablution blocks which have been in bad state for a long time and a source of concern for students.
Mr Malanji said works to rehabilitate the ablution blocks were expected to start soon as contractors were already on site to start rehabilitation works.
Speaking on Thursday afternoon when he met CBU workers after meeting union leaders, Mr Malanji said the issue of delayed salaries at the institution was of great concern to him adding that he would take drastic measures to ensure that the matter was resolved.
"No body derives joy in getting his or her salary late and so, as area MP, I would like to commit myself that I will work on this problem until it is resolved," Mr Malanji said.
Despite the assurances from the MP, the CBU workers are still adamant, calling for the immediate removal of the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Naison Ngoma, who they accuse of running down the campus. The workers are furious especially that apart from providing leadership, the state of infrastructure has continued to deteriorate while alleged mismanagement has become the order of the day.
