- By SIABANA KELVIN

KITWE City Council has devoted every Wednesday of the week as a general cleaning day for Chisokone Market.

This is to avert the further spread of cholera which also spread to Kitwe from Lusaka where the disease initially broke out.

The exercise would be conducted between 06 hrs and 10hrs to make the market clean and conducive for marketeers and other traders.

Kitwe Town Clerk Bornwell Luanga noted that Kitwe was the economic and mining hub of Zambia adding that Chisokone Market should be a shining example to other big markets in the country in terms of cleanliness.

Mr. Luanga said the market was one of the biggest on the Copperbelt hence the need for traders and other marketeers to conduct their businesses in an area which had acceptable hy- giene standards for the benefit of their customers.

The Town clerk said the Council would engage the marketeers and other partners in the city to ensure that they got involved in the cleaning exercise every Wednesday before starting their businesses so that they could trade in a clean environment.

"I’m urging the marketeers and other traders at Chisokone market not to shun the general cleaning day because it is a very important day for everyone," said Mr Luanga.

The town clerk appealed to the marketeers to be vigilant and report anyone who would be found throwing litter anyhow at the market to the local authority.

Mr Luanga has also advised the residents of Kitwe not to buy fresh food products on the streets such as meat, fish and others in order to prevent the further spread of cholera in the mining city.
