Structures on sewer lines to go

- By MUYANI SHINJABALE

A CIVIC leader in Ndola on has instructed that structures built on top of the sewer lines in Masala Township be demolished.

Ndola Mayor Amon Chisenga made the directive after inspecting the area with Acting Town Clerk Wisdom Bwalya and engineers from Ndola City Council and Kafubu Water and Sewerage Company.

Mr. Chisenga noted that the sewer system was collapsing and engineers were failing to maintain it because people had built on the sewer line and the road.

The mayor cautioned residents of Masala to desist from building on service lines, saying the sewer system had been a hype of media coverage as it had continuously been blocked following residents’ continued disposal of diapers, sanitary towels including still born babies in sewers.

Engineers from Kafubu Water and Sewerage lamented the state of affairs in Masala as the current sewer pipes servicing the area was constrained seeing that it was designed to service a minimal population as opposed to the current population in the area.

And Acting Town Clerk Wisdom Bwalya on the other hand urged Ndola residents and Masala in particular to protect public infrastructure being put up with colossal sums of money.

Mr Bwalya urged residents to desist from dumping waste like diapers and stones, among other wastes, in the sewer pipes.

This is contained in a statement made available to the Daily Nation by Ndola City Council Public Relations Manager Tilyenji Mwanza.

"The water company has bemoaned the affairs in Masala as the current sewer pipes servicing the area are constrained seeing that it was designed to service a minimal population as opposed to the current population in the area," noted Mrs Mwanza in the statement.

Ms Mwanza said the authorities were currently laying down new pipes to meet the population demands of which will be completed by May 2018.
