Lilanda traders happy with LCC takeover
By MUKOSELA KASALWE THE exit of the Lilanda Co-operative Market executive committee from managing the affairs of the market has cheered several traders.
This follows numerous complaints from marketeers in rela- tion to the management of Lilanda market in Kapwepwe Ward 25, which has now resulted in the Lusaka City Council taking over running of the affairs in line with the Market and Bus Stations Act.
LCC Town Clerk Alex Mwansa emphasised on the importance of having a smooth transition which would see the Lilanda Co-operative Market executive committee handover the running of the market to the local authority as enshrined in the republican constitution.
Patriotic Front PF Kapwepwe Ward 25 councillor, Patrick Salubusa said the decision made by the local authority had excited marketeers who were confident that the move would bring transparency as well as accountability in the operations at the market.
Mr Salubusa said the move would also ensure enhanced san- itary conditions and hygiene.
The civic leader told the Daily Nation that there was jubilation at the market when the announcement was made by LCC director of community development and housing Boyd Kaoma.
Mr Salubusa said it was exciting to see traders escorting him from the market to his residence as a sign of thanking him over the development.
“Most marketeers felt that with Council being in charge of the market there will be accountability and transparency in the running of the market apart from putting value on good sanitary conditions,” he said.
Also present at the event was LCC market manager, and Matero Police officer-in-charge, the Kapwepwe Ward Development Committee, the PF leadership at the market and the Lilanda Co-operative Market executive committee.
