Mufumbwe installs 21 solar mills
GOVERNMENT has completed the installation of 21 solarpowered milling plants in Mufumbwe.
Mufumbwe District Commissioner Masela Sekeseke has confirmed the development in an interview with the Daily Nation.
Ms Sekeseke explained that the solar hammer mills were part of the 128 allocated to North-Western Province from the 2, 000 solar milling plants being installed across the country under the presidential initiative.
Ms Sekeseke added that the hammer mills have been installed in all the 21 wards in the district.
“As a district we received 21 solar hammer mills of which all of them have been fully installed though they are not yet operational because they are yet to be commissioned,’’ Ms Sekeseke said.
She said the people in the district are happy with the development adding that the installation of the solar milling plants would not only help reduce prices of mealie meal but provide employment opportunities to the local people especially youths.
“Besides that, a number of villages around these solar hammer mills will be connected with power because the power to be generated will be enough to sustain the solar hammer mills,” she said.
Ms Sekeseke said once fully operational, the solar powered-milling plants would also provide an alternative market other than the Food Reserve Agency for maize produced by small scale famers in the district.
