Cholera control measures hailed

- By BENNIE MUNDANDO

GOVERNMENT must be commended for the robust interventions to contain cholera, including the unprecedented immunization against the disease via Oral Cholera Vaccines (OCV), the Zambian DNA has said.

Zambian DNA spokesperson Spuki Mulemwa told the Daily Nation that without government’s timely intervention, the cholera situation would have deteriorated further, and could have resulted in more deaths than currently recorded.

Mr. Mulemwa said the intervention aimed at quelling the situation as well as ensuring that the affected marketeers and vendors were given temporal trading spaces at facilities such as City Market as a permanent solution was gratifying.

“Zambian DNA commends Government for the robust interventions to contain cholera, including the unprecedented immunization against the disease via OCV. We are elated that some markets, which were shut down during the clean-up exercise are now open and resumed business.

“It’ also gratifying to note that Government has re-opened the gutted City market on temporal basis for four months to allow marketeers continue earning a living. More so, we are delighted that Government has already identified an alternative trading place that would accommodate all vendors, who were displaced from the Lusaka Central Business District, once completed and ready for use,” Mr. Mulemwa said.

He said his organisation was happy that government through various local authorities in the affected cities and towns countrywide had identified alternative trading places for vendors, as preparation for constructing conducive trading facilities was underway.
