Lumwana mine donates cholera prevention kits

By JACKSON MAPAPAYI Lumwana Mining Company has donated assorted cholera prevention kits to Kalumbila District Health office valued at K130,000.

Items donated include 90x 25 kilogram bags of granular chlorine, 80 Sodium Hypochlori­te, 20 cholera rapid kids,80 water test kits, 80 hand sanitizer, 150 x25 kilogram bags of lime and 20 x32 litres of disinfecta­nt.

In a speech read on his behalf by Sustainabi­lity manager Christophe­r Mukala, Barrick Lumwana mine Country Executive Director Nathan Chishimba said being a corporate entity, the mining company believes in the mutual understand­ing to support community and the nation at large.

Mr Chishimba said the outbreak of the cholera epidemic in the country cannot be left to government alone but requires the efforts of all multi sectoral stakeholde­rs.

He said the mining company has taken a proactive role by joining the multi-sectoral response initiated by government in combating the epidemic.

“Therefore, we are here to donate the cholera prevention kits that will cutter for Kalumbila and Solwezi district health offices as part of the commitment for responsibl­e mining with the host communitie­s, “Mr Chishimba said.

He said in the long term, the mining company will continue to support initiative­s in water and sanitation as challenges in the community will also affect Lumwana mine.

And receiving the items, Kalumbika district commission­er Robinson Kalota thanked the mining firm for the gesture.

He said the move shows how much the mining company cares about the community.

He said though the district has not recorded any case of cholera it is prepared to combat any case that may surface.
