RTSA TO INCREASE FAST TRACK COURTS

- By VIOLET TEMBO

The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the judiciary to roll out the fast track court to other parts of the country.

RTSA Public Relations Manager, Fred Mubanga told Daily Nation in Ndola that under phase two, in the second quarter of 2018, the project would be rolled out to Copperbelt, Central, Eastern and Southern Provinces.

Mr. Mubanga expressed optimism that modalities for the project would be put in place and traffic offenders would be subjected to prosecution in regard to road traffic offences.

“From the period that the fast track court was introduced in Lusaka as a pilot project, it has worked well and we have witnessed change in behaviour of motorists in the capital city,” he said.

“We used to record 35- 40 cases per day but now it has reduced to 5 – 10 cases per day. This is why the agency has seen it to be important that the project be rolled out to all parts of the country,’ Mr. Mubanga added.

He said the agency was working on reducing road traffic accidents in the country by 50% percent by 2020.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mubanga said the agency has received attention and political will from the Zambian government to raise the country’s road profile.

He said raising a good road profile for the country could not only be achieved by the agency alone but the task required a multi sectoral approach to see to it that sanity was attained on the roads.
