Doctors impressed with Siamese twins’ steady progress

- By CHIKUMBI KATEBE

DOCTORS at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) are impressed with the condition of Siamese twins, Mapalo and Bupe, following the successful operation last Friday.

Mapalo and Bupe who were conjoined, were successfully separated at 16:58 hours in what experts said was a historic surgical operation carried out at one of the country’s highest health referral centre.

Lead surgeon Bruce Bvulani said the twins were making steady progress adding that Mapalo, has since been taken off the ventilator enabling her to breathe naturally without the equipment.

According to information from the medical staff in charge of the twins, Mapalo was doing much better while Bupe was stable.

Both girls were responding well to medication and remain in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for close monitoring.

UTH Surgeon, Bruce Bvulani announced in a statement released to the media that the girls have been making steady progress.

“One of the twins, Mapalo has been moved off the ventilator, but otherwise still on oxygen, while Bupe remains connected to the vent to assist her with the breathing at the moment,” he said.

According to ZNBC news, the twins were responding well to medication and that the hospital should give a more comprehensive report on their condition.

The twins were conjoined at the abdomen area until the historic operation to separate them on Friday after over eight-months of birth.

The Kawambwa twins born connected at the abdomen with attached livers were separated in an operation carried out on Friday to allow them to live apart for the first time in their almost 10 months of life.
